Cleansing the first step in any good skincare regime but why? To some of you it may be quite obvious that cleaning is the best way to keep blemishes and greasy patches at bay but cleansing is so much more than that. In fact, cleansing can actually be anti-ageing, anti blemish and with the right products help with skin concerns such as rosacea, acne and dull complexion.

It’s fairly obvious why you need to clean your skin every morning and night. It removes dirt and grime from the day, including makeup which can get into your pores and cause breakouts. Even if you’ve cleansed well in the evening, your skin naturally produces dead skin cells, sebum and oils during the night, so cleansing in the morning is still important. Cleansing is also an important step as you can exfoliate your skin, sloughing off dead skin and encouraging the growth of new cells, brightening and plumping the skin, which of course is key to anti-ageing.

Now you’re convinced, how exactly should you cleanse your skin? Cleansers come in many forms. Despite what you may have heard, no cleanser is bad or wrong - it’s just important to choose the right type for your skin and ensuring your method is an effective one.

Using soap however can be harmful to the skin. Many soaps contain chemicals and ingredients that will strips your skin and dry it out, causing irritated patches and even breakouts. Most importantly, using ‘just water’ will never cleanse your skin - would you clean your clothes covered in oils and makeup with just water? Lastly, ensure that you’re using ‘clean’ things to clean your skin. Sounds obvious, but it’s easily overlooked. That means thoroughly cleansing your hands before you touch your face, using a clean muslin cloth or flannel every time to remove the product, using fresh water from the tap (and not out of the sink) and drying your face with a clean towel.

Here are The Apothecaries top tips for getting you started with selecting the perfect cleanser:

Combination / Oily

Skin that is prone to excess oils and breakouts benefit from ingredients such as Salicylic acid and Tea Tree Oil which combats those problems, leaving your skin clear and and feeling fresh.

A foaming cleanser allows the ingredients to work on the skin, without causing irritation. Try Medik8 Beta Cleanse for a facial wash that can control blemishes and remove dead skin cells.

Normal / Dry

Cleansers aren’t designed to just strip the skin - they can also add nutrients and moisture too. For dry skin, a cream cleanser works best, allowing you to massage the skin and work the product in, without irritating it, softening flaky or cracked skin. Cream cleansers also work well for removing makeup as they can gently break down any excess product. Medik8 Cream Cleanse contains orange oil, which has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties to help keep your skin calm and comfortable.

Sensitive skin doesn’t react well to strong ingredients such as perfumes or high potency chemical exfoliants. Use emollient products that condition the skin, rather than stripping it of essential moisture. Try SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser an emollient cream base product for dry and sensitive skin types, it removes dirt, oil and impurities without dehydrating the skin and has a scent derived from natural ingredients as well!
